Poor Nia is sick today. She and Owen are both feverish with headaches/stomachaches. We did have a fun day, though! The horseback riding was so terrific. Kirah cracked everyone up with her hilarious trail dialogue in her low, booming voice echoing through the forest. I was worried about how she’d do but she didn’t fall off at all and loved every minute of it! She kept telling Olivier, who was in front of her, to get his horse to go faster so she could get hers to trot.
Ciara got to ride one of my old horses, Raj, and it was wonderfully satisfying to see my baby on my former mare’s baby. He’s all grown up now and mostly gray with little red/brown spots. Ciara loved it so much that she was sad all the way home because “Before I didn’t know what I was missing, not being able to ride horses all the time. Now I do.” Bran was on a small Appaloosa being led behind the guide’s horse and he loved it, too…he hugged his horse when he was done. I was on a GIANT 17-hands-high Percheron. Whoa! (No pun intended.) That horse was HUGE! I had to use a stepping stone and practically jump up from there just to get on.
What a lovely time we had, though. The forest trails and hills covered with shady trees, the sounds of birds calling, and sunlight coming down in slanted shafts through the leaves as our horses kicked up dust…it was just lovely. What memories. We’ll never forget it!
When we got back I was so exhausted that I practically keeled over and fell asleep for about two hours. (Ciara and I had also been on a two-hour walk before the ride…we saw three deer, a black squirrel, and some chipmunks.) After that we went to the laundromat for some much-needed clothes washing, then drove to Sugar Camp Lake for some swimming. We didn’t stay long because the sun was heading on its way down but it was a lot of fun. That is a really great lake, so clear and such a lovely temperature, and shallow–you can go way out before it gets deep. We’ll probably go back tomorrow after we go to Wildwood, a wild animal zoo. We need to get the kids really tired so they can take a good long late nap for the airport adventure tomorrow night!
Kavi will be home in a little less than 26 hours!
